Use feet, inches, or both. Measure the water, not the hole.
How many gallons is my pond?
Multiply length × width × average depth in feet, then multiply by 7.48 to get US gallons. A 10 × 8 ft pond with an average depth of 1.5 ft holds about 900 gallons. Measure the water, not the hole, and add your stream or pondless basin to get the whole system.
How the math works
Volume in cubic feet × 7.48 = US gallons. Rectangle: length × width × average depth. Circle: 3.14 × radius² × average depth. Oval: 0.785 × length × width × average depth. Freeform: length × the average of several widths × the average of several depths. Real ponds have sloped sides and rocks, so treat the result as a close estimate.
